My journey with Faber Castell Polychromos started somewhere around 2018. That was when I discovered the brand. I watched people use it on YouTube and enjoy it. Therefore, I couldn’t wait to get a set of my own. That happened on my birthday in 2020. I bought the complete set of 120 together with the Caran Dache Luminance 76 set. I’d heard a lot about both brands, and I looked forward to start using them. It’s been a few years since that day, and I thought I’d share my thoughts on the Faber Castell Polychromos in this blog post.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE POLYCHROMOS

I was super excited to get started with my coloring pencils, but it didn’t take me long to realize it wasn’t going to be easy. It’d been about 20 years since the last time I drew anything when I picked up the Polychromos from the store, after all.

The pencils had a learning curve, and they were vastly different from the Caran Dache Luminance. As a complete beginner, I found them slightly frustrating, simply because I had no idea how to use them. Figuring out how to layer them took time and mixing them wasn’t the easiest either.

But, I wasn’t going to let this stand in my way and I got to work. Now, several years later, I can definitely tell they are one of my favorite colored pencils. I enjoy using them in adult coloring books and for detailed work.

WHO ARE THE POLYCHROMOS FOR?

The Faber Castell Polychromos are highly pigmented, nice to hold, and have a well-thought-through color range. They come in a tin box where they are well protected, and they are available in several different sets. The downside is that the names on the pencils are somewhat difficult to read.

They are amazing to work with and create stunning and vivid drawings, but if you’re a beginner, or someone who’s unfamiliar with colored pencils, these might not be for you. Even more so if you don’t have the patience to layer.

Colored pencils are time consuming, and especially oil based pencils like the Polychromos, but if this doesn’t bother you, feel free to check them out.

Once I got used to them, I found myself reaching for them over and over again.
