When I was younger, I was mostly interested in colored pencils. I might’ve tested some watercolors, but I always returned to my colored pencils. So it wasn’t until a few years ago that my interest in other art mediums awakened. Now, I want to explore gouache, watercolors, clay, digital art, and of course, markers. At least for a start. I want to test and explore while I also learn and try to find my way.

I think markers will become a stable medium for me with time, because ever since I bought my 320-set of alcohol markers from Ohuhu about a year ago, I’ve been stuck.

I’d been curious about the Ohuhu markers for a while before I bought my set as a birthday gift to myself about a year ago. Ohuhu has a lot of markers so it wasn’t the easiest to decide which to buy, but since I’d heard a lot of good things about them, I decided to go big, and went for the Honolulu 320-set with a brush and chisel tip. I thought they would suit my needs best.

They arrived in a big black bag along with a plastic sheet you can put behind the paper you’re drawing on, a brochure, and swatch cards. Literally everything you need, but paper, to get started.

I also bought their sketchbooks, and I find their paper quality really good.

As a beginner artist, I was amazed by how easy the markers were to blend and work with. I wouldn’t have expected that from a brand as cheap as Ohuhu. I paid around 230 dollars after a 20% discount for my 320-set. 

The price may vary depending on where you live, but I definitely believe the Ohuhu markers are worth it. I don’t regret buying them, and one year in, they are still working fine.

The downside with alcohol markers is that they smell strongly of alcohol, which shouldn’t be a surprise. I eventually got used to it, but it’s something you need to be aware of before buying them.

I’d say anyone who thinks alcohol markers would be a fun art medium to use. Doesn’t matter if you’re a skilled artist or a beginner artist. Personally, I look forward to learning how to urban sketch with them and to combine them with colored pencils.
